The mountainous northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan is facing a dire situation as officials have issued a flood alert due to glacial melting. The region has been hit hard by heavy rains, leading to the destruction of property and farmland, as well as the loss of many lives.
Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have warned residents to move to safer locations as the flood situation could worsen. Muhammad Qaiser Khan from the local disaster management authority emphasized the importance of taking timely safety measures to prevent a heavy loss of life and property.
In the past five days alone, 59 people, including 33 children, have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the province. Additionally, at least 2,875 houses and 26 schools have either collapsed or been damaged.
The neighboring province of Baluchistan is also grappling with heavy rainfall and has expressed concerns about its limited resources to handle the situation. If the rains persist, Baluchistan may seek assistance from the central government.
This is not the first time Pakistan has faced devastating floods. In 2022, heavy downpours caused widespread flooding, resulting in the loss of 1,739 lives and $30 billion in damages. With the monsoon season set to begin in June, authorities are urging residents to take precautions and prepare for potential disasters.
