Palestinian Band Escapes Horrors of War but Members’ Futures Remain Uncertain

DOHA, Qatar — The members of the Palestinian band Sol Band have found solace in music amidst the chaos of war in Gaza. Strolling along Doha’s waterfront promenade, they sing softly about children who are now “birds in heaven,” free from the pain of the conflict that has ravaged their homeland.

For Rahaf Shamaly, the band’s main vocalist and only woman, the desire for peace is palpable. “I just want the war to end,” she said. “I want to return to Gaza, walk its streets, hug my family, and sing with the band where it all began.”

Despite the band’s longing for their homeland, five of the seven musicians returned to Gaza in August to work on their next album. However, their plans were disrupted when Hamas and other militants launched attacks on southern Israel, leading to a deadly military campaign that has left thousands dead and Gaza in ruins.

Escaping the violence, the bandmates were able to leave Gaza in April and find refuge in Qatar. The band, known for blending traditional Arabic songs with modern pop, has been a source of comfort for its members who have endured the hardships of living in Gaza under siege and occupation.

Music has been a lifeline for the band, with their songs serving as a beacon of hope in the midst of despair. Despite the challenges they face in obtaining visas and traveling internationally, the band remains determined to share their music with the world.

As they navigate an uncertain future, the members of Sol Band continue to find strength in their music and in each other. Their resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the power of music to heal and inspire, even in the darkest of times.
