Palmdale’s Critical Need for Youth Mental Health Services Met by Antelope Valley’s First County-Operated Program

Los Angeles County officials recently marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of the Antelope Valley’s first county-operated, youth-centered mental health program in east Palmdale. The Antelope Valley Child and Adolescent Program is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to provide essential mental health services to all juveniles under 21 in the area.

This new facility offers a range of services including individual, group, and family therapy, crisis intervention, case management, medical evaluations, and psychological testing. With a team of 30 trained health professionals and additional case workers, the program is equipped to support young people with a variety of community resources beyond just mental health needs.

The need for such a program became apparent due to the exponential population growth in the Antelope Valley, which has increased from approximately 380,000 to 540,000 residents. Despite this surge in population, mental health services have not expanded to meet the growing demand for care.

Community health worker Esmeralda Flores emphasized the importance of having a youth-focused program in the AV to address the rising number of young people struggling with depression and anxiety. She expressed her heartfelt concern for those who may not have access to the help they need, urging them to seek support at the new outpatient facility.

The program is open to all children, regardless of insurance coverage, and will work to provide free or low-cost services to those in need. The facility, located at 2323 E. Palmdale Blvd., Suite A, will operate on weekdays with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accommodate the community’s needs. This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the mental health needs of young people in the Antelope Valley.
