The Carolina Panthers made a bold move in the NFL draft on Thursday night, trading up to select wide receiver Xavier Legette out of South Carolina with the 32nd overall pick. The 6-foot-1, 221-pound Legette had a breakout season with the Gamecocks, recording 71 catches for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns.

Panthers general manager Dan Morgan praised Legette’s “dog mentality” and physical attributes, noting that he brings a unique skill set to the team. Legette joins a receiving corps that includes Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, and Jonathan Mingo, giving young quarterback Bryce Young another weapon to work with.

Head coach Dave Canales highlighted Legette’s versatility, pointing out his ability to line up in various positions on the field. Legette himself expressed confidence in his abilities, stating that he is ready to bring a physical presence to the NFL.

Interestingly, this is the second time in four years that the Panthers have selected a player from South Carolina in the first round, with cornerback Jaycee Horn being their previous pick in 2021. Legette credited Horn for helping him improve as a player during their time together in college.

The Panthers made the trade with the Buffalo Bills to secure Legette, giving up the 33rd overall pick and a fifth-round selection in exchange for the 32nd pick and a sixth-round pick. With Legette now in the mix, Carolina looks to continue building a strong roster for the upcoming season.
