Parasite outbreak in Devon’s water network has ‘devastated’ local businesses, say residents

Business owners in Devon are facing a crisis as a waterborne disease outbreak has wreaked havoc on their livelihoods. South West Water has urged 16,000 households and businesses in Brixham to boil their drinking water after traces of the parasite cryptosporidium were found in the Hillhead reservoir.

The disease, cryptosporidiosis, has already affected 46 people, with more cases under investigation. South West Water suspects that cattle manure may be the source of contamination, as a damaged air valve was found in a farmer’s field.

The impact on local businesses has been devastating, with Stephen Colemansfield, owner of Redlands Guest House, stating that the outbreak has led to cancellations and uncertainty. Other businesses are reporting cancellations into June, with fears and concerns spreading among residents.

Rob, head chef at the Steam Packet Inn, expressed frustration at the lack of communication from South West Water and the challenges faced in managing the situation. The outbreak has affected water supplies for restaurants, causing disruptions ahead of events like the Dart Music Festival.

In response to the crisis, South West Water has increased compensation for affected customers to £115 and issued an apology for the disruption caused. However, business owners like Colemansfield are seeking more than just compensation, calling for accountability and a resolution to the ongoing problem.
