Parent commends bus driver for preventing disaster as 18-wheeler plunges from overpass

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A Nova Scotia bus driver is being hailed as a hero after his quick thinking saved the lives of students on board when a tractor-trailer crashed through an overpass guardrail and landed just feet in front of the school bus on the road below.

Matthew Baird, whose stepsons attend Rocky Lake Junior High, expressed his gratitude towards the bus driver for his attention to detail during the terrifying incident on Highway 102 near Bedford, N.S. Baird recounted how the bus driver skillfully maneuvered the vehicle to avoid a potential catastrophe, all while keeping the students calm.

Baird’s stepsons shared photos of the aftermath with him, describing the scene as something out of a movie set. They were in awe of the bus driver’s composure and quick actions that prevented a tragedy.

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is planning to formally thank the bus driver for his heroic actions. Meanwhile, RCMP are still investigating the crash, but have found no evidence of criminal activity on the part of the tractor-trailer driver.

Following the incident, Nova Scotia’s Department of Public Works inspected the damaged overpass and guardrail, installing a temporary barrier for safety while work begins on a new bridge rail system. The community is grateful for the bus driver’s bravery and quick response that averted a potential disaster.
