Parents and teachers in Indiana are voicing their concerns over proposed changes to high school diploma requirements. At a recent Indiana Department of Education meeting, many individuals spoke out against the proposal, which would offer students two diploma options: the Graduates Prepared to Success (GPS) Diploma and the GPS Plus Diploma.

The GPS Diploma would focus on college readiness competencies such as standardized testing and dual enrollment, while the GPS Plus Diploma would cater to students considering apprenticeships after high school. Supporters of the proposal, like Ron Sandlin from the Department of Education, believe that these options will allow students to customize their education and be better prepared for their future endeavors.

However, not everyone is on board with the proposed changes. Teacher Benjamin Tomell expressed concerns that students may not receive a well-rounded education under the new system. The Indiana State Teachers Association also raised issues about equity, access, and rigor in the proposed diplomas.

Despite the pushback, the Board of Education has until December to adopt the rule, which would go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year. Public comment will continue through the spring and summer, giving stakeholders more opportunities to voice their opinions and concerns.
