Pennsylvania legalizes 4-day school week, following trend from Western states.

Pennsylvania public school districts are no longer required to have 180 days of instruction annually, thanks to new legislation signed into law in December. The amendment to the Pennsylvania School Code allows districts to choose between 180 school days and meeting hourly instruction requirements of 900 for elementary students and 990 for secondary students.

This change opens the door for districts to implement four-day school weeks with extended hours Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday to meet the instructional hour requirements. However, Erie area school districts are hesitant to adopt this new schedule.

While some districts in other parts of the country have already transitioned to four-day weeks, the trend is still relatively new in Pennsylvania. School officials in the state are carefully considering the potential benefits and challenges of this new scheduling option.

Proponents of the four-day school week argue that it can help attract and retain teachers, save money on transportation and food service costs, and provide students with additional opportunities for enrichment and job training.
