Pennsylvania school board reverses decision to cancel talk by ’30 Rock’ actor due to his ‘lifestyle’

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Cumberland Valley School District in Pennsylvania faced backlash after initially canceling a speech by actor and anti-bullying advocate Maulik Pancholy due to concerns about his activism and “lifestyle.” The decision was met with outrage from students, parents, and community members who believed the cancellation was motivated by Pancholy’s sexual orientation.

After two weeks of outcry, the school board held a special meeting where they ultimately voted 5-4 to reinstate Pancholy’s visit to a local middle school. The actor expressed his gratitude in a video posted on social media, thanking the hundreds of supporters who stood by him during the ordeal.

Pancholy, known for his roles on “30 Rock” and as the voice of Baljeet Tjinder on “Phineas and Ferb,” is also an author of children’s books on bullying and LGBTQ inclusion. The school board meeting, which lasted over five hours, began with apologies from some board members, including Bud Schaffner, who faced calls for his resignation over remarks made about Pancholy’s sexuality.

Despite the apologies and the board’s reversal, many in the community, including students, felt that more needed to be done to address the underlying issues of acceptance and inclusion. One eighth-grade student spoke out against the board’s initial decision, stating that it sent a message that it’s okay to judge those who are different.

Trisha Comstock, a parent in the district who started a petition to reinstate Pancholy’s talk, emphasized the importance of creating a more tolerant and inclusive community. She highlighted the impact of belonging on individuals’ well-being and stressed the ongoing work needed to ensure all students, staff, and community members feel accepted.

The incident at Cumberland Valley School District serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting acceptance and combating bullying in educational settings. The community’s response to the initial decision to cancel Pancholy’s speech reflects a growing awareness of the need for inclusivity and respect for all individuals.

As the school district moves forward from this controversy, the focus remains on fostering a culture of acceptance and support for all members of the community. The reinstatement of Pancholy’s visit signals a step in the right direction, but the work towards building a more inclusive environment continues.
