A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center has revealed that most Americans are increasingly concerned about the influence of social media companies in politics and the country. The survey, which included 10,133 U.S. adults, found that Democrats, in particular, are growing more wary of the power wielded by major technology companies.
According to the survey, about eight-in-ten Americans believe that social media companies have too much power and influence in politics today, up from 72% in 2020. This sentiment is especially pronounced among Democrats, with 74% of them expressing concerns about the influence of these companies, compared to 84% of Republicans.
Furthermore, the survey also highlighted that a majority of Americans view social media as having a negative impact on the country, with two-thirds of respondents believing that these platforms have a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the country today.
In terms of political censorship and bias in Big Tech, the survey found that most Americans think social media sites actively censor political viewpoints they disagree with. Additionally, more Republicans than Democrats believe that major technology companies are biased toward liberals.
The survey also delved into the issue of government regulation of technology companies, with 51% of Americans supporting more regulation of Big Tech companies. Democrats were found to be more supportive of increased government oversight of tech companies compared to Republicans.
Overall, the survey results indicate a growing concern among Americans, especially Democrats, about the influence and power of social media companies in politics and the country. As these sentiments continue to evolve, it remains to be seen how policymakers and tech companies will address these growing concerns.
