Performances of Songs from the Great American Songbook on Shelter Island

Shelter Island Friends of Music (SIFM) is set to host a captivating evening of music featuring soprano Amy Burton and pianist/composer John Musto on Sunday, May 26th. The duo will be performing songs from the Great American Songbook at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m.

The Great American Songbook, which includes timeless classics from composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin, is considered to be the most important and influential American jazz and popular songs from the early 20th century. Singer Tony Bennett has even hailed this genre as “America’s classical music.”

Amy Burton and John Musto, a talented husband and wife duo based in New York City, have garnered acclaim for their performances both in the U.S. and abroad. Musto, a renowned pianist and composer, has received multiple awards, including two Emmys, and was recently honored with the Arts and Letters Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Burton, a sought-after opera singer, has graced prestigious stages worldwide and currently teaches at esteemed institutions like Julliard and the Mannes School of Music.

The upcoming concert at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church marks the fourth event in SIFM’s 47th season, which promises a lineup of at least seven concerts. Admission to the performance is free, with donations welcomed. Attendees can also enjoy a reception with the musicians following the concert.
