Pete McCloskey, Republican Challenger of Nixon, Passes Away at 96

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Pete McCloskey, a former California congressman who made a name for himself by challenging President Richard Nixon’s war policies in Vietnam, has passed away at the age of 96 at his home in Winters, California. McCloskey, a Republican known for his liberal views, represented the San Francisco area for 15 years and was a vocal advocate for environmental causes.

In 1972, McCloskey launched a bold but unsuccessful campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, criticizing Nixon’s handling of the Vietnam War. Despite having no party support or realistic prospects, McCloskey passionately spoke out against the war’s “cruelty and futility,” drawing attention to the devastating impact on both Vietnamese and American lives.

While his presidential bid may have been unsuccessful, McCloskey’s legacy lived on through his environmental legislation, including the Endangered Species Act of 1973. He was also known for his advocacy for veterans and his efforts to help them receive college educations upon their return from duty.

In later years, McCloskey made headlines for his legal battle with television evangelist Pat Robertson, whom he accused of avoiding combat duty in the Korean War. The lawsuit ended in a victory for McCloskey, further solidifying his reputation as a principled and outspoken figure in American politics.

Despite facing challenges and setbacks throughout his career, McCloskey remained true to his beliefs and values, ultimately leaving a lasting impact on environmental policy and political discourse in the United States.
