Peter Tabichi’s Science Program is Empowering Students to Overcome Poverty

In a remote part of Kenya’s Rift Valley, Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School stands out as a beacon of hope for its 480 students. Despite facing challenges such as drought, famine, and poverty, the school is being transformed by the dedication of one teacher, Peter Tabichi.

Tabichi, a maths and physical science teacher, not only teaches his students but also mentors them and provides support to those in need. He donates 80 percent of his income to help his students, many of whom come from poor families and face difficult circumstances at home.

Through Tabichi’s guidance, the students of Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School have excelled in national science competitions, showcasing their talent and innovation. Despite limited resources and a high student-teacher ratio, Tabichi has inspired his students to reach new heights and pursue their dreams.

Tabichi’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently named one of the top 10 finalists for the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize 2019. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding teachers who have made a significant impact on their students and communities.

If Tabichi wins the Global Teacher Prize, he plans to further support the school and community by investing in educational programs, improving internet connectivity, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Tabichi’s story serves as an inspiration to teachers around the world, highlighting the important role they play in shaping the future. His dedication and passion for education are making a difference in the lives of his students and are a testament to the power of teaching.
