Pew Center uncovers divisive and unifying topics among American citizens

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A recent Pew Research Center survey has shed light on the deep divides between supporters of former US President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden on key “culture war” issues. The survey, which gathered responses from over 8,700 individuals, highlighted stark differences in beliefs on gun ownership, the legacy of slavery, immigration, gender identity, the criminal justice system, separation of religion and state, and feminism.

One of the most significant divides highlighted in the survey is on the role of guns in society. While Biden supporters prioritize gun control and believe that increased gun ownership reduces safety, Trump supporters overwhelmingly prioritize protecting the rights of Americans to own guns. The survey also revealed stark differences in views on race and the legacy of slavery, with Biden supporters acknowledging the systemic advantages White people have over Black people in society.

On issues of religion, gender identity, and feminism, the survey found that Biden supporters are more likely to support the separation of religion from government policies, accept diverse gender identities, and advocate for same-sex marriage and abortion rights. In contrast, Trump supporters are more conservative in their views on these issues, with a majority opposing the legalization of same-sex marriage and stricter immigration policies.

Overall, the survey underscores the deep ideological divisions that continue to shape American society and politics, with supporters of Trump and Biden holding vastly different views on key cultural and social issues.
