Masters champion Scottie Scheffler found himself in a shocking situation on his way to the PGA Championship in Louisville, Ky. The top-ranked golfer in the world was arrested Friday morning for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation.

Images captured Scheffler handcuffed and being taken to jail, dressed in gym shorts and a T-shirt. He was later seen in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot before being released to return to Valhalla Golf Club for his tee time.

Louisville Metro Police Department booked Scheffler on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer after his vehicle dragged an officer to the ground. Scheffler described the incident as a “big misunderstanding amid a chaotic situation.”

Despite the ordeal, Scheffler remarkably posted a 5-under 66, keeping him in contention for a second straight major championship. His attorney, Steve Romines, stated that they will litigate the case as it progresses.

The incident, which resulted in the death of tournament vendor John Mills, caused traffic delays and a delay in the tournament schedule. Scheffler was eventually released and returned to the course, where he received support from fans wearing “Free Scottie” T-shirts.

Scheffler, who recently welcomed his first child, is aiming to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year. The PGA of America expressed condolences for Mills’ family and stated they are cooperating with local authorities in reviewing the incident.

The shocking turn of events has left the golf world stunned, but Scheffler remains focused on his game as he continues to compete at the highest level.
