Cybersecurity Skills Shortage in the Philippines Sparks Concerns

In the midst of a surge in malicious cyber activity targeting the Philippines, the country is facing a critical shortage of cybersecurity professionals. The rise in hacking and digital intrusions, particularly amid tensions with China over disputed territory in the South China Sea, has prompted concerns about the nation’s digital security capabilities.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has launched a cybersecurity strategy to bolster the country’s cyber defenses and combat cyber attacks and digital crimes. However, industry analysts warn that the Philippines is facing a significant shortage of skilled “cyber warriors,” with an estimated need for tens of thousands of digital security professionals.

Experts point to a brain drain in the cybersecurity sector, with Filipino professionals being lured abroad by higher salaries, better working conditions, and relocation packages offered by companies in the U.S., Singapore, the U.K., and the Middle East. Despite the relatively higher salaries in cybersecurity compared to other IT careers in the Philippines, the country is struggling to retain its cybersecurity talent.

Globally, the shortage of cybersecurity professionals has reached a record high, with an estimated 4 million vacancies worldwide. In the Philippines, domestic shortages are exacerbated by inadequate training opportunities and policies to boost recruitment at a national level.

To address the cybersecurity skills gap, the government has launched new cybersecurity standards for schools and training centers and plans to introduce more specialist degrees and programs to upskill existing professionals. However, experts emphasize the need for accessible career progression and better communication of the importance of cybersecurity to attract and retain talent in the field.
