Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr expressed concern over China’s new rules that could lead to the detention of foreigners in the South China Sea, calling it an “escalation” and “worrisome”. China recently issued new rules enforcing a 2021 coast guard law, allowing the detention of foreigners suspected of trespassing in the disputed waters.

During a state visit to Brunei, Marcos stated that the Philippines will use any opportunity to prevent aggressive actions by China and ensure Filipino fishermen can continue fishing in the South China Sea. He emphasized the importance of managing aggressive actions to maintain peace in the region.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs defended the new rules, stating they aim to standardize law enforcement and uphold maritime order. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reassured that as long as there is no illegal behavior, there is no need to worry about the rules.

Marcos has taken a tougher stance on China’s actions in the South China Sea compared to his predecessor, with support from allies like the United States, Japan, and Australia. China claims jurisdiction over much of the South China Sea, a crucial trade route, despite an international tribunal ruling in 2016 that its claims have no basis under international law.

The ongoing tensions in the South China Sea highlight the complex maritime disputes in the region, with both China and neighboring countries like the Philippines asserting their claims over the strategic waters.
