The Philippines Takes Active Role in High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting
The Philippines, represented by H.E. Mersole J. Mellejor, Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria, played a significant role in the recent High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting, organized by the Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, aimed to strengthen collaboration between international partners and African Member States affected by terrorism.
Ambassador Mellejor emphasized the Philippines’ support for the United Nations Joint Appeal for Counter-Terrorism in Africa, recognizing it as a crucial tool in addressing complex threats strategically and innovatively through multi-partner initiatives. The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing multilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism and expressed readiness to share its experiences with African nations.
Furthermore, the Philippines highlighted its dedication to an inclusive, transparent, and human rights-based peace and security policy, guided by the Philippine Development Plan. The country also emphasized its strategic cooperation with the UN through the recently signed Philippines-United Nations Cooperation Framework, which outlines areas of collaboration for 2024 to 2028.
The High-Level meeting in Abuja provided a platform for the Philippines to engage with partners in Africa and around the world, as well as the UN, to strengthen international cooperation in preventing and combating terrorism.
