Philippines sets ambitious goals to increase solar and wind energy output by 2030

The Philippines is setting ambitious targets to increase its use of renewable energy sources, aiming to double its solar power output and quadruple its wind power output by 2030. This move is part of the country’s efforts to make its grid one of the cleanest in the region.

According to a government presentation, the Philippines plans to increase the share of solar power in its energy mix to 5.6% by 2030, up from 2.4% in 2024. Similarly, the share of wind power is set to rise to 11.7% from 3.1% during the same period. These increases will help non-fossil fuel sources account for 35% of the country’s power generation by 2030.

To achieve these targets, the Philippines plans to double its solar capacity and triple its wind capacity over the next six years. The country is also looking to invest in offshore wind farms, despite the high upfront costs associated with such projects.

Additionally, the Philippines aims to add 1,200 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2032 and upgrade its transmission infrastructure to accommodate the growth of renewable energy sources. The government also plans to decommission or repurpose over 3.8 GW of coal-fired power plants that are more than 20 years old.

Overall, the Philippines is targeting a significant reduction in the share of coal in its power generation, aiming to bring it down to 47.6% by 2030 from the current level of about 60%. These efforts reflect the country’s commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sector.
