The American Folk Art Museum in New York City paid tribute to Pussy Riot founder Nadya Tolokonnikova at a benefit pop-up event on Thursday. The event, titled “An Evening with Nadya Tolokonnikova, Creator of Pussy Riot,” showcased the art, music, and activism of the Russian-born punk rocker.

Attendees were treated to a display of Tolokonnikova’s recent artwork, a lively Q&A session, and a high-energy musical performance where she took the stage in her signature white ski mask with black X’s over the eyes. Special guest David Byrne of Talking Heads presented Tolokonnikova with an award for Dynamic Achievements in the Arts, praising her contributions to contemporary art and activism.

The event served as a prelude to Tolokonnikova’s upcoming solo museum show, “RAGE,” scheduled to open on June 21 at OK Linz in Austria. The exhibition will feature pieces from her newest series “DARK MATTER,” as well as artifacts from her time in prison and mementos from Pussy Riot’s advocacy work.

CEO Jason T. Busch of the American Folk Art Museum expressed admiration for Tolokonnikova’s commitment to justice through art, stating that her work embodies the spirit of resilience and creativity that the museum champions. The benefit event not only celebrated Tolokonnikova’s achievements but also supported the museum’s mission of fostering dialogue and understanding.

The event was captured in a series of photos, showcasing the dynamic atmosphere and the presence of influential figures like David Byrne and Frida Kahlo. The evening was a testament to the power of art and activism in creating meaningful change in society.
