The Madras High Court is set to hear a public interest litigation petition that seeks to crack down on the black market for Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets in Chennai. The petition, filed by advocate A. Sathiya Prakash, highlights the challenges faced by cricket fans in purchasing tickets at fair prices.
Prakash’s affidavit points out that the demand for IPL tickets in Chennai is high, but the availability of tickets at reasonable rates is limited. He alleges that a black market mafia is operating behind the scenes, leading to exorbitant prices for tickets. Recent arrests by the city police have uncovered the extent of the problem, with individuals selling tickets for up to 10 times their actual price.
The petitioner argues that this black market activity deprives genuine cricket fans of the opportunity to watch matches live at the M.A. Chidambaram Cricket Stadium. He emphasizes the need to investigate the entire nexus behind the illegal sale of tickets and calls for stringent action against those involved.
With the PIL scheduled for admission before the Madras High Court, the issue of ticket scalping in the IPL has come under the spotlight. Cricket enthusiasts in Chennai are hopeful that the legal intervention will help curb the black market practices and ensure fair access to tickets for all fans.
