Planned Parenthood to Invest $10m in Democratic Organising Efforts in North Carolina
Planned Parenthood has announced its plan to invest $10 million in Democratic organising efforts in North Carolina’s swing districts, marking its largest single state investment to date. The investment is aimed at driving voters to support Democratic candidates running for office in the state, including a hotly contested governor’s race, as well as boosting turnout for Joe Biden in the 2024 election.
In 2020, North Carolina was won by Donald Trump by just over a percentage point, but a recent analysis by Moody’s Analytics suggests that the state could flip blue in 2024. One key issue in the state is abortion access, as North Carolina is the only Deep South state where abortion is legal after six weeks of pregnancy.
Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, a Republican candidate for the state’s gubernatorial race, has endorsed a total ban on abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected. His stance on abortion has become a major talking point for Democrats campaigning in the state this year.
Planned Parenthood’s investment will not only focus on the gubernatorial and presidential elections, but also on 16 state legislature races. Democrats in North Carolina are hoping to break the Republican supermajority in the state legislature by picking up a single seat and holding onto the ones they currently have.
The investment by Planned Parenthood has drawn criticism from Republicans, with a spokesman for Mr Robinson calling it part of the “same old playbook” used by Democrats in the past. However, Democrats are optimistic about their chances in North Carolina, especially with the state’s rapidly growing population and shifting demographics.
With the stakes high in North Carolina, both parties are gearing up for a fierce battle in the upcoming election. Democrats see this as a crucial moment to make gains in the state, while Republicans are determined to maintain their stronghold. The outcome of the election in North Carolina could have far-reaching implications for the future of the state and the country as a whole.
