Planned Parenthood Makes Historic $10 Million Investment in North Carolina

In a bold move to bring the national debate over abortion access to North Carolina, Planned Parenthood Votes South Atlantic has announced its largest-ever investment of $10 million in organizing efforts in the state. The money will fund digital advertisements, new field offices, and a canvassing operation focused on swing counties, with the goal of knocking on over one million doors by the end of 2024 to discuss preserving abortion access with voters.

While abortion is not a direct ballot issue in North Carolina, Democrats are counting on it to energize the race for governor and potentially boost President Biden’s support in the state. The current Republican nominee for governor, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, has endorsed a ban on all abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, adding to the urgency of the debate.

Planned Parenthood’s investment will also target key state House and Senate races, where Democrats aim to break the Republican supermajority. The group’s organizers plan to engage suburban white women, as well as young, Black, and Latino voters, in conversations about the importance of reproductive rights in North Carolina’s political landscape.

Other organizations, like Red, Wine and Blue, are also prioritizing abortion access in their messaging ahead of the November elections. Janice Robinson, the group’s North Carolina director, emphasized the importance of fighting to protect abortion rights in the state, stating, “We are prepared to fight with everything in us to stop what’s happening in North Carolina and we will not give up.” With the stakes high and the battle lines drawn, North Carolina is set to become a pivotal battleground in the national fight for reproductive rights.
