Poland Purchases US Radar Systems for Surveillance of North-Eastern Borders

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Poland has taken a significant step towards enhancing its national security by signing a $960 million agreement with the United States for the delivery of an airspace reconnaissance system. This system, which includes four aerostats or moored balloons, will be stationed along the eastern and north-eastern borders of Poland to monitor the skies and assist in protecting the country’s airspace.

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating that Poland will be the second country in the world to utilize this advanced system. The move comes as Poland aims to strengthen its armed forces in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with a focus on investing in protecting its eastern border.

The aerostats equipped with radars will have the capability to monitor the sky as far as Ukraine, Belarus, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad from Polish airspace. They will be able to detect a wide range of objects, including missiles, aircraft, drones, and surface vessels within a range of over 300 km.

The system is expected to be fully operational by 2027 and will provide Poland with enhanced surveillance and security capabilities. This agreement marks another milestone in the cooperation between Poland and the USA in the field of defense and national security.
