Police advise travellers to be well-prepared for trips to ski resorts in NSW and Victoria

As the ski season kicks off, holidayers are being urged to prepare properly before hitting the slopes to avoid being turned back by police. Last year, over 3600 vehicles were forced to turn around at Mount Hotham for not having the required wheel chains for driving in snowy conditions.

Victoria Police Eastern Region Superintendent Shane Cashman emphasized the importance of being prepared for changing snow conditions, even for seasoned snow-goers. Fines for not carrying wheel chains during the snow season can reach $370, with penalties of $970 for not fitting them when instructed.

With a heavy police presence expected at ski resorts in Victoria and NSW, including highway patrols and liquor licence officers, visitors are reminded to prioritize safety on their journey. NSW Police launched Operation Snow Safe to target alcohol-related crime, dangerous driving, and risky behavior on the slopes.

Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar APM highlighted the million tourists expected to visit the alpine region during the snow season and urged everyone to plan their trip, take breaks, and check weather conditions before heading out. A new police station at Jindabyne will support search and rescue operations around the snowfields.

Both NSW State Emergency Services and Victoria Police responded to numerous incidents last year, including a man who drove off a cliff at Mount Buller ski resort and a driver of a private bus found driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Superintendent Cashman warned against poor driving behavior in inclement weather and stressed the importance of using common sense on the roads. As ski resorts brace for a slow start to the season, with only one chairlift operating in NSW during the opening weekend, it is crucial for holidayers to heed these warnings and ensure they are properly equipped for a safe and enjoyable snow experience.
