A man who doused himself in an accelerant and set himself on fire outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump is on trial has tragically died, according to the New York City Police Department.
The incident occurred at Collect Pond Park around 1:30 pm on Friday when the man, who had travelled from Florida to New York in the last few days, took out pamphlets espousing conspiracy theories, tossed them around, and then set himself on fire. Despite the quick response of police officers and bystanders who rushed to his aid, the man was declared dead by staff at an area hospital.
The park outside the courthouse has been a gathering spot for protesters, journalists, and onlookers throughout Trump’s trial, which began with jury selection on Monday. The streets and sidewalks in the area have been relatively quiet and orderly, with small crowds present.
Authorities are now reviewing security protocols, including the possibility of restricting access to the park. New York City Police Department Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry mentioned the potential need to shut down the area and stated that officials would be discussing the security plan soon.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the courthouse area, prompting officials to consider additional measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
