Police report that a Baltimore teacher utilized artificial intelligence to fabricate racist audio of the principal

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a shocking turn of events, a Baltimore high school athletic director has been arrested for using artificial intelligence to impersonate a principal and create a voice recording filled with derogatory comments about students and staff. Dazhon Darien, a physical education teacher at Pikesville High School, allegedly used AI software to falsify a recording of school Principal Eric Eiswert, which went viral on social media in January, sparking outrage within the Baltimore County Public Schools community.

The Baltimore County Police Department conducted an extensive investigation and determined that the recording was not authentic, but rather generated through the use of AI technology. Darien, 31, now faces charges including theft, stalking, disruption of school operations, and retaliation against a witness. This case is believed to be one of the first of its kind nationwide, prompting calls for updated legislation to address the misuse of AI technology.

This incident is part of a larger trend of AI misuse in schools across the country, with cases involving deepfakes and AI-generated synthetic media becoming more prevalent. From creating fake nude photos to fabricating voice recordings, students are finding ways to exploit AI technology for malicious purposes.

As authorities work to address this growing issue, the Baltimore case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by AI-generated misinformation and the urgent need for regulations to prevent further misuse. The rise of deepfakes in schools has raised concerns about privacy, security, and the potential for widespread deception in the digital age.
