Police say top tennis star’s boyfriend’s death is an ‘apparent suicide’

The sudden death of Konstantin Koltsov, the boyfriend of tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, has shocked the sports world. Police in Miami, Florida, are investigating the incident as an “apparent suicide” with no evidence of foul play.

Koltsov, a former professional hockey player from Belarus, was found dead at a hotel in Miami at the age of 42. Sabalenka, currently ranked world number two by the WTA, is in the city for the Miami Open and is scheduled to play her first match on Friday. Despite the tragic news, she reportedly intends to still compete in the tournament.

The Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement confirming the investigation into Koltsov’s death, stating that no foul play is suspected. The news was announced by Salavat Yulaev, the Russian hockey club where Koltsov played and later worked as an assistant coach. The club described him as a beloved and respected figure.

Koltsov, known for his speed on the ice, represented Belarus in the Winter Olympics and played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL. He was first linked to Sabalenka in 2021, and the couple frequently shared photos together on social media.

In a heartfelt Instagram post last year, Sabalenka expressed her love and admiration for Koltsov, calling him her “dearest person” and “strongest support.” The couple had been seen together at various tennis events, with Koltsov cheering on Sabalenka after her recent Australian Open victory.

As the sports world mourns the loss of Koltsov, support is available for those in need. Samaritans offers help for anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal, with a helpline and email service for those seeking assistance.
