North Carolina’s opportunity scholarship program has seen a surge in support, with a 500% increase in applications and 3 in 5 respondents in a recent poll showing their approval. The Carolina Journal Poll, which surveyed 600 registered voters, revealed that 64% believe America is on the “wrong track” and inflation is a top concern.
Last year, North Carolina made history by becoming the 10th state to offer universal school choice to its K-12 students, even without a Republican trifecta in state government. The $60.7 billion two-year spending plan included $17.3 billion for this fiscal year and $17.9 billion for 2024-25, with a focus on increasing accountability through required student testing for schools with opportunity scholarship students.
While not all applicants will receive scholarships, the program has garnered significant support, with 41.1% of respondents in favor of increasing funding. President Joe Biden’s recent higher education plan, which aims to relieve over $3.6 billion in student loans for North Carolina borrowers, has also sparked discussion.
In terms of political races, the poll showed a close race between President Biden and former President Donald Trump, with Trump leading by a narrow margin. The governor’s race has also tightened, with Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson holding a slight lead over Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein.
Overall, the poll reflects a sense of concern among North Carolina voters, with a majority believing the country is on the wrong track. As the state grapples with economic challenges and political uncertainty, the future of education and government spending remains a key issue for residents.
