A new poll conducted by Data Progress has revealed a stark divide between the Biden administration and its voters on the issue of Israel’s war on Gaza. The survey, conducted between 26-29 April, found that a majority of Democratic voters believe Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in the besieged enclave, a sentiment that is at odds with the US government’s stance.
According to the findings, 56 percent of Democratic voters disagree with the US administration’s position on Israel, while just 22 percent believe that Israel is not committing genocide. On the other hand, Republican voters largely align with the Biden administration, with 58 percent disagreeing with the genocide accusation and 23 percent agreeing. Among all likely voters, 39 percent believe Israel is committing genocide, while 38 percent disagree and 23 percent are unsure.
The Biden administration has also faced criticism for its handling of calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite two-thirds of US voters supporting a ceasefire as early as February, the administration initially resisted the idea, citing concerns about benefiting Hamas. However, in recent days, the US has more forcefully called for an immediate ceasefire, following the killing of aid workers by an Israeli strike in April. The latest polling shows that 70 percent of all likely voters, including a majority of Democrats and Republicans, support a permanent ceasefire and de-escalation of violence in Gaza.
In a significant shift, the Biden administration announced this week that it was halting a weapons shipment to Israel over concerns about the conflict. The decision reflects a growing sentiment among voters, with 46 percent disapproving of Congress’ authorization of $4 billion in aid to replenish Israel’s missile systems. Among Democrats, 52 percent disapprove of the authorization and 42 percent believe military aid to Israel should decrease, while among Republicans, 37 percent disapprove and 28 percent want to see aid decreased.
The ongoing war in Gaza has also sparked protests across at least 90 universities in the US, with young Americans particularly vocal about their opposition to Israel’s actions. The repression of these protests by law enforcement agencies has further polarized public opinion, with 46 percent of all likely voters disapproving of limiting students’ rights to protest Israel’s military operations. Democrats show greater disapproval (55 percent) compared to Republicans (36 percent) on this issue.
The findings of the poll suggest a significant disconnect between the Biden administration and its voters on the issue of Israel’s war on Gaza, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in US foreign policy and domestic sentiment. As the conflict continues to unfold, the stance of the US government and its response to calls for a ceasefire will likely remain a point of contention among the American public.
