M.R. Poovamma, the senior-most member of the Indian women’s 4x400m relay team, has made a remarkable comeback at the age of 34 after a two-year ban for a doping offence. Poovamma, who was part of the team that secured a spot at the Paris Olympics during the World Athletics Relay in the Bahamas, is determined to prove that age is just a number when it comes to athletic performance.
“I wanted to prove that I am still the main member in the relay team and I can still do it. Even age does not matter. I wanted to set an example. I had a very satisfying comeback at this stage and I am very happy,” Poovamma said.
Despite facing obstacles upon her return to competition, including a dispute with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) regarding the end of her ban period, Poovamma persevered and ultimately succeeded in qualifying for the Olympics.
The Arjuna Awardee, who has a long list of accolades to her name, including medals at the Asian Championships and Asian Games, is determined to continue running as long as her body allows.
“I can’t take it if somebody tells me to stop the sport, I love my sport so much. I will continue till my body allows, even now I have no plans to quit,” Poovamma stated.
Her inspiring story of resilience and determination serves as a reminder that with dedication and passion, athletes can overcome any obstacle, regardless of age. Poovamma’s journey is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and achieve greatness in the world of sports.
