Legendary Philadelphia TV sports anchor Joe Pellegrino, a beloved member of the Action News team in the 1970s, passed away at the age of 89 at his home in Marlton. His death was attributed to cardiac disease with complications from diabetes.
During his time at WPVI-TV from 1971 to ‘76, Pellegrino was the main sports anchor alongside news anchor Larry Kane and weatherman Jim O’Brien. Kane fondly remembered Pellegrino as an “instant sensation” who was adored by viewers and colleagues alike.
After leaving Philadelphia to pursue opportunities in other cities, Pellegrino returned in the 1980s to work with Kane at WCAU-TV. Kane described Pellegrino as one of the nicest human beings he ever worked with, emphasizing his kindness and professionalism in the broadcast community.
Merrill Reese, the longtime radio announcer for the Eagles, paid tribute to Pellegrino on social media, highlighting his contributions to the sports broadcasting industry. Pellegrino’s daughters, Shawna and Melinda, shared heartfelt memories of their father, describing him as loving, supportive, and humorous.
Pellegrino’s impressive career included stints in Washington, Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, and San Francisco, where he won multiple local Emmy awards. He was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2010 for his outstanding contributions to the field.
A funeral service is scheduled for May 11 at the Fort Lincoln Funeral Home in Maryland, where Pellegrino will be laid to rest. His legacy as a talented sports anchor and beloved personality in the broadcasting world will be remembered by many.
