Port of Baltimore preparing for alternate entry option

The Port of Baltimore was thrown into chaos after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge following a collision with the cargo ship DALI. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of March 26, resulted in the closure of the port and the loss of life of several workers on the bridge.

In response to the disaster, the Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command has been working tirelessly to establish an alternative channel for restricted use by “commercially essential vessels” involved in response efforts. This temporary channel, located on the northeast side of the main channel, aims to facilitate the clearing of debris and support the flow of marine traffic into Baltimore.

Captain David O’Connell, federal on-scene coordinator for the Unified Command, emphasized the importance of this alternate route as a crucial first step towards reopening the port of Baltimore. The channel will be marked with government lighted aids to navigation and will have specific depth and clearance requirements to ensure safe passage for vessels.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore has had significant implications for trade activity, particularly for imports of sugar used by the ASR Group’s Domino Sugar refinery. While the refinery has assured that operations will not be immediately impacted, the long-term effects of the port closure remain uncertain.

As the cleanup and reconstruction efforts continue, experts predict that vessel traffic from Baltimore may be diverted to other East Coast ports, leading to increased transportation costs and delays. The full extent of the disruption to trade activity, including the sugar industry, will depend on the duration of the port closure and the timeline for rebuilding the bridge.
