Portugal’s Travel and Tourism Industry Set to Achieve Record-Breaking Year by Exceeding 2019 Levels

The Portugal tourism industry has hit a new milestone this year, surpassing previous records to contribute over €54 billion to the economy. According to a report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the sector saw a remarkable 24.3% increase in 2024 compared to 2019, making up 20% of the national economy.

The WTTC President & CEO, Julia Simpson, expressed optimism about the future of Portugal’s tourism sector, stating that the ongoing influx of tourists has led to significant economic contributions. The country has become a top travel destination, with both international and domestic tourist spending expected to reach €30.7 billion and €17.9 billion, respectively.

Looking ahead to 2034, the WTTC forecasts that the tourism sector will continue to thrive, contributing around €66.5 billion to the economy and supporting up to 1.4 million jobs nationwide. This represents one in four workers in Portugal and highlights the sector’s potential for growth and job creation.

In 2023, key markets such as Brazil, the USA, Switzerland, Spain, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Canada contributed to the influx of tourists in Portugal. The UK remained the main source of overnight stays in Portugal, with Germany and Spain also experiencing significant growth in visitor numbers.
