Postseason Standouts in Tennis, Swimming, and Beach Volleyball Named San Diego’s Athletes of the Week

In a thrilling display of talent and determination, Torrey Pines senior Robert Freedman emerged victorious in the CIF San Diego Section singles tennis championship. Facing a tough opponent in Otay Ranch’s AJ Abarca, Freedman found himself trailing 5-4 and love-40 before mounting a remarkable comeback to win 7-5, 6-2 at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Meanwhile, Cathedral Catholic’s Bella Ayers showcased her skills in beach volleyball, teaming up with Kai Welch to lead the Dons to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Torrey Pines in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division final.

On the swimming front, Torrey Pines’ Logan Noguchi set new records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-butterfly, demonstrating his prowess in the pool with impressive times.

In girls swimming, La Jolla’s Arielle Brotman completed a four-year sweep of her two individual events at the CIF San Diego Section meet, showcasing her dominance in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke.

In boys swimming, Point Loma’s Alex Pletcher made a splash by winning the Division 2 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle events at the section championships.

Lastly, Oceanside’s Malia Jones excelled in girls track and field, capturing the Avocado League triple jump title with a season-best mark and finishing second in the long jump.

Poway’s Kayla Menges also shone in softball, delivering a stellar performance on the mound to secure victories for her team.
