Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa made a stunning start to the Norway Chess tournament by defeating Firouzja Alireza of France in the Armageddon game in the first round. After a draw under normal time control, Praggnanadhaa had to win the Armageddon game to secure the victory, and he did so in style.
The day saw all games under classical time control ending in draws, leading to six Armageddon games to determine the winners. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen played two draws, including a marathon draw with reigning world champion Ding Liren, while Hikaru Nakamura emerged victorious over Fabiano Caruana in the Armageddon.
After the first round, Praggnanandhaa, Carlsen, and Nakamura are tied for the lead with 1.5 points each. Praggnanandhaa’s victory over Alireza was particularly significant as it was his first ever over-the-board win against the French player.
In the women’s section, R. Vaishali put up a strong performance against women’s world champion Wenjun Ju but ultimately fell short. Koneru Humpy secured a draw in the Armageddon game to earn 1.5 points.
