Premier League boss warns that congested match schedule is reaching breaking point

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has raised concerns about the congested fixture schedule, suggesting that the steady increase of regional and international games may have reached a tipping point. With FIFA expanding the World Cup and introducing a new 32-team version of the Club World Cup, and UEFA’s expanded Champions League adding more games to an already-packed calendar, players are feeling the strain.

Masters emphasized the need to address the issue, stating, “The feedback we have from players is that there is too much football being played and there is constant expansion.” He highlighted the impact of pouring more liquid into a full cup, indicating that overloading the calendar and players could lead to a breaking point.

In response to the workload concerns, the Football Association, in partnership with the Premier League, recently decided to scrap FA Cup replays starting next season. However, this move has faced criticism from clubs lower down in the English league pyramid.

Masters also addressed the ongoing financial fair play case involving Manchester City, stating that the case will resolve itself in the near future. Additionally, he defended league officials in light of Nottingham Forest’s accusations against VAR Stuart Attwell, emphasizing the need for fair comments and improvements in VAR communication with fans.
