President Ranil Wickremesinghe is leading the charge in transforming Sri Lankan agriculture through the use of modern technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). During a recent visit to the AiGrow Company’s greenhouse in Nelumdeniya, Kegalle, the President highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting private sector entrepreneurs interested in this initiative.
The AiGrow Company, known for its innovative use of AI in agriculture, operates the first AI-powered greenhouse in Sri Lanka. With a focus on enhancing efficiency and productivity, the company designs and constructs customized greenhouses for various crops, including tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, and mushrooms.
Not only does AiGrow export a significant portion of its harvest and supply branded products to local supermarkets, but it also promotes its green agricultural automation devices to both local and international markets. Additionally, the company collaborates with local universities to provide educational opportunities in applying AI to modern agricultural practices.
President Wickremesinghe’s visit to the AiGrow greenhouse allowed him to witness firsthand the impact of modern technology on agricultural operations. During a discussion held at the premises, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to introducing modern agriculture to the country and providing necessary financial support and training for entrepreneurs in this sector.
Furthermore, President Wickremesinghe instructed officials to propose a bank loan system to facilitate the adoption of modern agricultural practices. With plans to modernize 100 Divisional Secretariat Divisions through the Agricultural Modernization Program, Sri Lanka is poised to revolutionize its agricultural sector with the help of AI technology.
