Malawi President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has called on the Malawi media to play a vital role in shaping the nation’s narrative and rebuilding its national agenda. Speaking at Kamuzu Palace during World Press Freedom Day, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of portraying Malawi as a nation with agency and capacity, rather than one without means.

He urged the media to share inspiring stories of how Malawi has confronted challenges like climate change, highlighting the country’s resilience and determination. President Chakwera cautioned against painting Malawi as helpless during crises, as it could harm the nation’s reputation and interests.

Addressing press freedom in the country, the President affirmed journalists’ obligation to tell Malawi’s story in any manner, emphasizing his commitment to upholding press freedom and the Access to Information Act. He denounced any attempts to tarnish Malawi’s international reputation by restricting press freedom, stating that he has never ordered the arrest of a journalist.

Since assuming office four years ago, President Chakwera has celebrated World Press Freedom Day with the press in Malawi. This year’s theme, “Guardians for Democracy: Advocating Media Independence for Credible Elections,” underscores the importance of a free and independent media in ensuring credible elections.

As Malawi continues to navigate challenges and strive for progress, President Chakwera’s call to the media to tell the Malawian story with agency and positivity serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling in shaping a nation’s identity and future.
