Haiti Names Members of Transitional Presidential Council to Continue Efforts for Fresh Elections
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haiti has taken a significant step towards resolving its political and socio-economic crisis by naming the members of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT). The council’s formation paves the way for the French-speaking Caribbean Community country to move forward with plans for fresh elections.
In a decree published in the official gazette Le Moniteur, the members of the CPT were announced. The council includes former diplomat Smith Augustin, ex-Senator Louis Gerald Gilles, former central bank governor Fritz Alphonse Jean, and other prominent figures such as ex-Senate President Edgard Leblanc Fils and entrepreneur Laurent Saint-Cyr. Additionally, Evangelical pastor Frinel Joseph and former World Bank official Regine Abraham have been appointed as non-voting observer members.
The announcement of the council members came shortly after the government denied rumors circulating on social media about the publication of the decree. Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry, who took office following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, has expressed his intention to step down once the CPT is officially installed and a new prime minister is sworn in ahead of the upcoming elections.
However, Henry is currently stranded in Puerto Rico after being unable to return home from Kenya, where he was involved in discussions regarding a multinational security mission to restore peace and security in Haiti. The CPT members have urged for their prompt installation, accusing the Henry government of attempting to introduce modifications that could further delay the peace-building process in the country.
With the formation of the Transitional Presidential Council, Haiti is now one step closer to finding a resolution to its ongoing crisis and moving towards a more stable and prosperous future.
