Presidential Spokesperson announces India’s withdrawal of all military personnel from Maldives

The last batch of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives have been successfully repatriated, marking the completion of President Mohamed Muizzu’s deadline for their withdrawal from the archipelagic country. The strained relations between India and the Maldives came to the forefront as Muizzu, perceived as a pro-China leader, insisted on the removal of Indian military personnel operating three military platforms in the Maldives by May 10.

A total of 90 Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives, with the first batch being withdrawn in March and the second batch in April, totaling 51 soldiers. The repatriation of these soldiers was a key promise made by Muizzu during his presidential campaign last year.

The Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives to operate and maintain two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft gifted by India. They played a crucial role in infrastructure maintenance and utilized resources provided by the Indian administration to the Maldives.

The withdrawal of Indian troops came after four rounds of meetings between India and the Maldives, with the last meeting held in New Delhi on May 3. Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer visited India and met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, expressing gratitude for India’s support in the repatriation process.

The strong relations between India and the Maldives were highlighted during this process, showcasing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving issues between the two countries. The Maldives holds a significant position in India’s maritime strategy in the Indian Ocean Region, emphasizing the mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity that underpin their relationship.
