Northwest Missouri State University undergraduate students and a faculty member from the School of Education showcased their expertise at social studies conferences in Missouri and Kansas. Megan Trussell and Alyssa Wright presented at the Missouri Council for the Social Studies conference in Springfield, while Jenna Stallo presented at the Kansas Council for the Social Studies at Wichita State University.
Dr. Tina Ellsworth, an assistant professor of professional education, accompanied the students to the conferences in February. The trio presented sessions focusing on topics such as preparing for contentious issues and promoting historical literacy with primary sources.
Ellsworth emphasized the importance of teacher candidates developing leadership skills and engaging in civil discourse within the classroom. She hopes that by participating in these conferences, students will see themselves as contributors and leaders in the field of education.
The students expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by Northwest and the School of Education. Trussell highlighted the networking opportunities and the chance to deepen her understanding of integrating civil discourse in her future classroom.
Ellsworth, who joined the Northwest faculty in 2021, brings a wealth of experience in curriculum, multiculturalism, social studies, and change management. With a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Kansas, she is dedicated to preparing future educators for successful careers.
Overall, the participation of Northwest students and faculty at these conferences highlights the university’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and enriching educational experience for aspiring educators.
