Preventable Health Threat: Anaemia in Girls and Women in India

According to the National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS-5, 2019-21), a significant number of men and women in India are suffering from anaemia. The survey revealed that 25 per cent of men aged 15-49 years and a staggering 57 per cent of women in the same age group are affected by this condition.

Anaemia is a common yet preventable health threat among girls and women in India, as highlighted by health experts. The deficiency of healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin can lead to symptoms like tiredness, weakness, and shortness of breath. The lack of a proper iron-rich diet, especially among women of reproductive age, contributes to the prevalence of anaemia in the country.

Dr. M. Wali, a Senior Consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, emphasized the importance of iron-rich diets and supplements for combating anaemia, particularly in women. He noted that anaemia is prevalent in both rural and urban women in India, with various factors like diet, pregnancy, and lactation contributing to the condition.

The NFHS-5 data also revealed high prevalence rates of anaemia among young adolescent boys, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and small children in India. Common indicators of anaemia include fatigue, pale complexion, breathlessness, dizziness, and cold extremities.

Health experts stressed the importance of early detection and prevention of anaemia through a balanced diet rich in iron, supplements, and regular screening. By promoting healthy eating habits and advocating for accessible iron supplements, women can empower themselves to combat anaemia and lead healthier lives.
