Preventing Cardiac Arrest in Diabetic Patients: Strategies for Heart Health and Diabetes Management

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and its impact goes beyond just managing blood sugar levels. A recent study has shown that diabetes significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including cardiac arrest, where high levels of blood sugar over time can damage blood vessels and nerves that control the heart. This alarming revelation has prompted healthcare professionals to emphasize the importance of proactive measures in managing diabetes to prevent the risk of cardiac events.

In an exclusive interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. TS Kler, Chairman and HOD at BLK-Max Heart and Vascular Institute in BLK Max Super Speciality Hospital, shed light on the connection between diabetes and heart health. He explained, “Individuals with diabetes are more prone to developing coronary artery disease, which can lead to heart attacks and ultimately cardiac arrest. Heart failure is a long-term impact of diabetes, and people with diabetes tend to develop heart disease at a younger age than people without diabetes. Proper management of diabetes through medication, lifestyle changes, and regular medical check-ups is essential in reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications, including cardiac arrest.”

Dr. Kler recommended several precautions that diabetic patients can take to prevent cardiac arrest, including managing blood sugar levels within a target range, following a healthy diet low in saturated fats and high in fruits and vegetables, engaging in regular exercise, adhering to prescribed medications, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels, making lifestyle modifications such as avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption, increasing muscle mass, and attending regular medical check-ups.

Echoing Dr. Kler’s sentiments, Dr. Sumit Sawhney, Physician at Shivam Hospital, emphasized the importance of maintaining optimal blood glucose levels through consistent monitoring, medication adherence, and a balanced diet. He highlighted the role of regular physical activity in improving insulin sensitivity, strengthening the heart muscle, enhancing circulation, and managing weight, all of which are crucial for preventing cardiac issues in diabetic patients. Dr. Sawhney also stressed the significance of managing additional risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and smoking to mitigate cardiovascular complications.

In conclusion, Dr. Sawhney advised diabetic patients to prioritize comprehensive diabetes management, adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, and communicate openly with healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of cardiac arrest and safeguard their long-term well-being. By taking proactive steps and following a systematic approach to managing diabetes, individuals can enhance their cardiovascular health and lead a longer and healthier life.

As the medical community continues to research and understand the intricate relationship between diabetes and heart health, it is essential for individuals with diabetes to stay informed, proactive, and engaged in their healthcare journey. By following the expert advice of healthcare professionals and taking control of their diabetes management, patients can significantly reduce the risk of cardiac events and pave the way for a healthier future.
