Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of mastering artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure that Malaysians themselves determine the cultural and moral values within this technology. Speaking at the 9th Series of the “Perkampungan Sunnah” programme in Kangar, Anwar highlighted the potential risks of allowing others, particularly from western countries, to control the values and morals embedded in AI.
During a recent meeting with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Anwar expressed concerns about the possibility of local values, religion, culture, and morals being shaped by AI from western countries. Nadella responded by emphasizing the need for Malaysians to master AI technology according to their own norms and environment.
Anwar pointed out that AI will dominate various sectors such as government management, defense, police, immigration, and agriculture. He stressed that AI mastery cannot be achieved without basic mathematics and science skills, noting a decline in interest in these subjects among young Malays.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, and Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin were also present at the event. The three-day Perkampungan Sunnah programme aims to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI and digital transformation in Malaysia.
In conclusion, Anwar’s message underscores the need for Malaysians to take control of AI technology to safeguard their cultural and moral values in the digital age.
