Job description: We are looking for a Principal Software Engineering Manager to build a new team focused on building systems that defend Microsoft including data engineering, construction of training data sets, creation of new telemetry sources, building of knowledge graphs, and creation of agentic AI systems or new security-focused language models. This leader would be responsible for working together with applied researchers to understand and deliver the necessary engineering and data solutions. As a new team, this leader would also be responsible for hiring and establishing the necessary relationships and team charter given the focus areas above.Security represents the most critical priorities for our customers in a world awash in digital threats, regulatory scrutiny, and estate complexity. Designing and building a comprehensive knowledge graph that captures real-world risk to investigation actions to response decisions and outcomes.

Authoring telemetry in products and services based upon observability gaps in investigation and response.

Partner with applied researchers to implement agentic AI infrastructure and solutions.

Partner with applied researchers to explore and train security-focused language models.

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

OR equivalent experience.
8+ years of people manager experience.
8+ years of engineering experience building and deploying products or services.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pytho

OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
6+ years people management experience.
Experience building customer solutions or open source projects using generative AI and/or multi-agent frameworks such as AutoGen, LangGraph, crewAI, or equivalent.
Demonstrated technical competencies with large-scale data processing and distributed compute tools such as Spark, Synape, or Dask.
Experience with building and deploying services on Azure including Azure Functions, Azure Containers, Azure DevOps pipelines, Github actions, Github Codespaces, and Jupyter Notebooks.
Experience working with applied researchers to understand requirements, conduct experiments, and rapidly build and deploy prototypes.
Experience with building scalable production solutions in Python and open source.
Background in cyber security including knowledge of adversary tradecraft or emerging threats

Software Engineering M6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 – $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 – $314,400 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
