Professor shares his story at the National World War II Museum – News Center

A new exhibit at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is shedding light on the remarkable story of Reby Cary, a Coast Guardsman and the first African American professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. The exhibit, which features a photo of Cary from the UTA News Service Photograph Collection, highlights his significant contributions to education and civil rights.

Cary, who taught the University’s first African American history courses and established the Minority Cultures Collection with UTA Libraries, played a pivotal role in breaking down barriers for African Americans in academia. His experience as a radio operator in the Coast Guard during World War II, where he served aboard the USS Cambria in the Pacific theater, shaped his perspective on the intersection of war and civil rights.

Rob Citino, a distinguished fellow with the National World War II Museum, emphasized the importance of recognizing how the legacy of World War II influenced the civil rights movement. Cary’s story exemplifies the resilience and determination of African American veterans who returned from the war to advocate for positive change in their communities.

Cary’s post-war career in education and public service further solidified his legacy as a trailblazer for equality. From helping establish a trade school for African American veterans to serving in the Texas House of Representatives, Cary’s impact reverberated far beyond the classroom.

“Reby Cary was a man who broke down walls and then walked through the gaps he had created to make things better for African Americans and all Americans,” Citino remarked. Cary’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of those who fought for justice and equality during a tumultuous period in history.
