Projected Cancer Rates and Mortality in Canada

A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has projected declining rates of cancer cases and deaths in Canada for the year 2024. The study highlights the success of prevention and early detection programs in the country, but also points out areas where more work is needed to save and prolong lives.

Lead author Darren Brenner, an associate professor at the University of Calgary, stated that more people are surviving with and beyond their cancers, indicating positive progress in the fight against the disease. The study estimates that lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer rates are expected to decrease this year, while less common cancers like melanoma, liver, kidney cancers, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are on the rise.

Breast cancer incidence rates remain stable, with mortality rates decreasing due to successful screening approaches and improved treatment options. Colorectal cancer cases and deaths have significantly decreased in recent years, thanks to organized screening programs that detect precancerous polyps early.

Despite the overall decrease in cancer rates and deaths, the study projects 247,100 new cancer cases and 88,100 cancer deaths in 2024, largely due to a growing and aging population. Lung cancer is expected to remain the most diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths, even though rates are decreasing due to tobacco control and improved treatments.

Researchers emphasized the importance of sun safety to prevent melanoma, a cancer that has been increasing for many years. They also highlighted the need for more research into cancers like liver and kidney cancers, which are causing more deaths and lack routine screening methods.

The study serves as a reminder of the progress made in the fight against cancer in Canada, while also pointing out the areas that require further attention and resources to continue saving lives.
