Proposed class size changes by DCPS raise concerns for local union about education quality

Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, is facing staff cuts that could lead to larger class sizes next year, causing concern among parents and teachers alike. Interim Superintendent Dr. Dana Kriznar sent out an email last week outlining the proposed cuts, which could have a significant impact on the quality of education in the district.

Parents like Angelica Hurtado are worried about the implications of larger class sizes on their children’s education. Hurtado expressed concerns about her son potentially getting lost in the mix with more students in the classroom. She emphasized the importance of her children receiving the attention and support they need from their teachers.

The proposed cuts, which could eliminate more than 700 positions at DCPS, come as the district is losing enrollment in traditional schools to charter schools. This shift in enrollment patterns is putting pressure on the district to make difficult decisions about staffing and resources.

According to the district, class sizes could increase to 22 students in grades pre-K through 3rd grade, exceeding the state-recommended average by four students. In higher grades, class sizes could be even larger, with fourth and fifth-grade classes potentially having 24 students, and high school classes having nearly 30 students.

Duval Teachers United, the local union, has raised concerns about the impact of these changes on the quality of education in the district. President Tammie Brooks-Evans emphasized the importance of considering the needs of students and the challenges that larger class sizes could present.

The district attributed the staff cuts to funding losses towards charter schools, as the state promotes school choice through vouchers. As the community grapples with these changes, parents, teachers, and administrators are working to find solutions that prioritize the educational needs of all students.
