Protesters arrested at Munich airport after breaching runway during German climate demonstration

Climate activists caused chaos at Munich airport on Saturday, leading to the arrest of eight individuals and the cancellation of around 60 flights during a busy holiday weekend. The activists, affiliated with the group Last Generation, glued themselves to a runway, prompting the airport to temporarily close.

The group criticized the government for subsidizing airlines over rail travel, with signs reading, “Problem is the government, not our holiday.” Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, condemned the actions, stating that they endangered air traffic and harmed climate protection efforts.

Transport minister Volker Wissing called for new laws to classify such actions as criminal offenses, potentially punishable by up to two years in prison. The disruption at the airport lasted for nearly two hours, with 11 flights diverted and delays affecting many others.

The incident occurred during one of the busiest travel periods for the airport, causing significant inconvenience for travelers. The airport spokesperson confirmed that the situation was under control, with both runways open for arrivals and departures.
